FERRIDAY — School is out and final reports are written, but there’s no reason Concordia Parish’s students should stay out of the library.
The Concordia Parish Library kicks off its summer reading program next Tuesday with a special performance by magician Glen Ghirardi.
The first performance will be at the Vidalia branch at 10:15 a.m., and the second performance will be at the library’s main branch in Ferriday at 2 p.m.
“We want all of the children of our parish to come and enjoy and be enriched by these programs,” Concordia Parish Librarian Amanda Taylor said.
The summer reading program will continue to have guests throughout the summer, and while the library offers different reading programs for students at the pre-school, elementary and teen levels, the performances aren’t age-restricted, library secretary Misty Chevallier said.
“These special guests are open to anybody,” Chevallier said.
The reading programs have garnered a lot of participation in the past, Chevallier said.
“We usually have a mega amount of kids come in,” she said. “They really love to come out and see the magicians, and our storytellers are very imaginative.”
This year’s special programs include a return by crowd favorite Harvey Rabbit, and a first-time appearance by the Shoestring Players, a children’s theater group.
“The reviews (the Shoestring Players) have gotten have been great, so we are really expecting it will be wonderful,” Chevallier said.
The age-specific reading programs will be Mondays at the Monterey branch, Tuesdays at the Vidalia branch, Thursdays at the Ferriday and Fridays at the Clayton branch.
The pre-school program will start at 9:30 a.m., and the elementary program — for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade — will start at 10:15 a.m.
The teen program will start at 11:15 a.m.
The theme for the pre-school and elementary level reading programs will be “Once upon a time,” and the teen program will be themed “Express yourself.”
The reading program will run from June 1 to July 10.
In addition to next Tuesday’s magic show, the special programs open to the public will include:
4June 11, storyteller Bobby Norfolk.
4June 16, the Harvey Rabbit music and variety show.
4June 25, storyteller Sylvia Davis.
4June 29, 30 and July 2, an LSU AgCenter program.
4July 9, the Shoestring Players.
The guest performances are co-sponsored by Concordia Bank.
