Alcorn not planning any more cuts

Natchez — Wednesday marked the first and last day of layoffs at Alcorn State University.
Earlier this week, administrators did not renew contracts for 60 faculty and staff members and said more cuts would likely come in the week.
Vice President of Development and Marketing Stephen McDaniel said Friday more cuts were not necessary.
“We have concluded that process,” McDaniel said.
McDaniel said the majority of the cuts were made to staff members, not faculty, and that no programs or classes would be cut as a result.
“We don’t anticipate this will impact our ability to deliver services to any of our students,” he said.
McDaniel said the cuts were necessary due to a general economic downturn and cuts from at the state level to the school’s $61 million budget.
Calls to the school’s President George Ross went unreturned Friday.
