WOODVILLE — Gloria Jean Johnson, a Woodville native and American Cancer Society volunteer, received the Spirit of Life Award from the Mississippi Partnership for Comprehensive Cancer Control on May 26 for her unwavering support for those in her community dealing with cancer.
Johnson is a three-time cancer survivor, winning battles against breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer, all since 2005.
After her first diagnosis, she was a vital part in assisting the American Cancer Society in starting a cancer support group in her community.
Throughout each of her diagnoses, Johnson has continued to not only host the bi-weekly support group meetings, but she also developed a protocol where physicians, nutritionists, and spiritual mentors are invited to one meeting a month to offer education and guidance to the members of the group.
She also participates in the advocacy efforts of the American Cancer Society.
Following a recent scan, Johnson learned of a new “spot” of cancer and is continuing chemotherapy.
Despite this recent diagnosis, she remains a fixture at the support group meetings, even joining her mother and sisters in preparing a buffet style meal for those in attendance.
The awards luncheon was sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Health, Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. The Spirit of Life Award is one of four Annual MP3C Distinguished Cancer Advocate Service Awards.
