The Miss-Lou paused to remember this week, celebrating Memorial Day along with the rest of the nation.

The annual march across the Mississippi River bridge to the Natchez National Cemetery allowed locals time to pause and reflect.

Memorial Day started things off right in the community, but the good news didn’t end there.

Let’s review some of the good headlines last week brought.

For years the Florida Avenue gym in Ferriday has been an eyesore and a hazard. But Recreation Director McKinley Bates isn’t one to give up, so he took matters into his own hands. With a grant and some inmate labor, Bates has turned the gym around.

Now, the gym is the home to a few neighborhood basketball games. The final product is nice, and Bates’ work shows what individuals can truly do for the community.

Louisiana Elastomer has hired approximately 25 employees, and more employees will be needed in the future. The rubber plant is a welcome addition to the Miss-Lou and we are happy to hear things are up and running.

The City of Vidalia is working on plans for its new municipal complex. The city’s financial planning and leadership has prepared the way for a new, larger complex. The new addition will be a great new face for the city.

Seventy riders lined the Vidalia Riverfront Saturday for a trail ride to benefit the Sunshine Children’s Center and Kyle’s House in Natchez. The fundraiser drew a good crowd, and we know everyone had fun.

As we move a week further into the summer months, we know the news to come is going to be good.
