FERRIDAY — Services for Thelma Beatrice Nix Lewis, 66, of Ferriday, who died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at her residence due to complications from cancer, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Concordia Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie L. Slater officiating.
Burial will follow at Ferriday Cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, both at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lewis was born April 20, 1943, in Clayton, the daughter of Osborne Nix Sr. and Edna Reed Nix. She attended school in Ferriday and moved to New Orleans in 1964. She retired from Tulane University after 28 years of service; worked for five years at the LaMerriden Hotel and 10 years at the residence of William and Yvonne Coe.
Mrs. Lewis evacuated to Ferriday after Hurricane Katrina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis Sr.; one daughter, Lisa Lewis; her parents; seven brothers, Willie Webbs, Amos Slater, Osborne Nix Jr., Prince Nix, Lamar Nix, Frank Nix and Ernest Slater; and three sisters, Willie Mae Webbs, Ida Slater Cooper and Jessie Nix.
Survivors include her devoted friend, Robert Winford of New Orleans; two daughters, Sheron McCoy of Shreveport, La., and Dana Lewis McCoy of Baton Rouge; two sons, Alcide Lewis and wife, Telisha, of New Orleans and Robert Lewis Jr. and wife, Germanette, of Ferriday; one god-daughter, Kewana Gary Henerson and husband, Vernon, of New Orleans; two sons-in-law, Reginald Koeller Jr. of South Carolina and Emanuel Harold of Baton Rouge; 16 grandchildren, Deadra Washington, Shawn Hampton, Charbonnett Hampton, Robinette Hampton, Anjel Koeller, Reginald Koeller III, Robin Lewis, Georgianna Lewis, Leonora Lewis, Robert Lewis, Josha Herbert, Alcide Lewis, Darryl Simmons, Shavonda Simmons, Sharon Simmons and Amber Henderson; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Grace Reed of Natchez, Mary Ann Nix and husband, Joe, of Houma, La., Juanita Carol Ann Nix of New Orleans and Barbara Slater of Kenner, La.; one uncle, Willie Nix of Frogmore, La.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Thomas of Wildsville, La., and Dalphine Staler of Gary, Ind.; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
