Local student honored at MC awards day
CLINTON — The Mississippi College Honors Day Convocation was held April 21 at First Baptist Church in Clinton. Outstanding students were recognized for their academic achievements and service to the university. The highest honors presented included the student body honors awards, Hall of Fame, and the Scott-Swor Founders Award.
Kelcie Danielle Messer, of Natchez, received the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants Award, represented by a scholarship key, is given annually from the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountant to the senior accounting major with the best general promise in the field of accounting.
Two locals among grads at Delta State University
CLEVELAND — Delta State University awarded 477 degrees to students during spring commencement exercises held Saturday, May, 9, inside the Walter Sillers Coliseum on the campus.
Graduates from Adams County were Chiquita Shuntay Williams, BA, Journalism, and Nicholas P. Anderson, BS, Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Allain receives award at Millsaps graduation
JACKSON — Thomas Alexander Allain of Natchez was awarded The Don Fortenberry Award at Millsaps College during the college’s commencement ceremony on May 9, 2009. The award recognizes the graduating senior who has demonstrated the most notable, meritorious, diligent and devoted service to the college with no expectation of recognition, reward or public remembrance. He received a bachelor’s degree in religious studies and a minor in faith and work. He is the son of Henry Allain and Lisa Allain.
Local students receive degrees from Millsaps
JACKSON — John Courtney Holleman, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Holleman, of Natchez, is a 2009 graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson. He received abachelor of business administration degree.
Thomas Alexander Allain, son of Ms. Lisa Allain and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allain, of Natchez, is a 2009 graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson. He received a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies.
Lee Inman White III, son of Ms. Wendy N. White and Mr. Lee I. White, of Natchez, is a 2009 graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson. He received a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting.
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund and the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, gave the college’s 115th annual commencement ceremony on May 9, 2009.
Ole Miss announces local spring semester grads

Local students named to chancellor’s list at Ole Miss
OXFORD — The following students from Adams County were listed on the chancellor’s honor roll for the University of Mississippi for the spring 2009 semester. A grade-point average of 3.75 throug 4.0 is required for full-time students carrying at least 12 semester hours for listing on the chancellor’s honor roll.
Students listed on the chancellor’s list are Adam Newell Pate, Augusta Mathilde Smith, Anna Katherine Williams, Andrew Joseph David, Chioma Udemgba, Joanna Leigh David and Anna Elizabeth Baker.
Four Natchezians named to dean’s list at Ole Miss
OXFORD — The following students from Adams County were listed on the dean’s honor roll at the University of Mississippi for the spring 2009 semester. A grade-point average of 3.5 through 3.74 is required for full-time students carrying at least 12 semester hours for listing on the dean’s honor roll.
Students listed on the dean’s honor roll are Elizabeth Grafton Pritchartt, Chinelo Udemgba, Caroline B. Lowe and Mary Cathering Ray.
Harrigill receives degree in engineering from Tech
RUSTON, La. — Louisiana Tech summer quarter commencment exercises were May 23 with diplomas awarded to 836 graduates.
Ryan Harrigill of Natchez graduated magna cum laude with bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.
Hinds Community College names scholars for spring
RAYMOND — The Hinds Community College deans’ and president’s scholars have been named for the 2009 spring semester. Dean’s list scholars are those students with a cumulative 3.5 to 3.9 grade point average. President’s list scholarships are those with a cumulative 4.0 grade point average.
Ken Beasley of Natchez was named to the dean’s list.
Lentz named to dean’s list at Ouachita Baptist
ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—A total of 273 students at Ouachita Baptist University were named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2009 semester. The students will receive a certificate of recognition from Ouachita and will be included in the “National Dean’s List” for 2008-09.
To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must compile a 3.5 grade point average and be classified as a full-time student, with a minimum of 12 academic hours.
Jordan Lentz of Waterproof, La., was named to the dean’s list.
Kissoum recognized for accomplisments at MUW
COLUMBUS — The College of Business and Legal Studies at Mississippi University for Women announces that the following student has received recognition for achievements.
Chelsea Kissoum, a native of Natchez and paralegal studies major at MUW, was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, Lambda Epsilon Chi, received the Senior Scholar Award, Outstanding Legal Studies Student Award and was named to the President’s List. She is the daughter of Richard and Kathy Kossum.
Woodville native a MSMS 2009 graduates
COLUMBUS — The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science recently had its 2009 graduation ceremony on May 22. During the ceremony, 117 students from across the state received their diplomas at Humphrey Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi State University. The graduates include the following area students:
Brittany Deneshia Bell, daughter of Charles and Elinor Bell of Woodville. Brittany is a former student of Wilkinson County High School, and plans on attending Millsaps College to study Psychology and Pre-Medicine.
