South Natchez grad hits hole-in-one on par-4

NATCHEZ — Duncan Park’s golf course has had its fair share of hole-in-ones on the par-3 holes over the years. But never a hole-in-one on any of the par-4 holes — until Friday morning.
Doug Johnson, who lives in McKinney, Texas, and was in town for the South Natchez Class of 1989’s 20-year reunion this weekend, decided along with fellow South Natchez 1989 graduate Tee Cotten, who now lives in Dallas, to play 36 holes of golf.
And on the 12th hole, Johnson made a double-eagle from 290 yards out with a driver. That was his first-ever hole-in-one and one that he will never forget.
“I knew I hit it pretty well. I was concerned it was off the green,” Johnson said. “We went around the green first. Then we tiptoed up the green.”
Cotten also said he knew Johnson’s tee shot was a good one, but he never envisioned it eventually finding its way into the cup.
“He was first to tee off. It went left of the bunker and took two hops and then rolled up on the green. After that, we couldn’t see the ball,” Cotten said.
Johnson said he was ecstatic about the accomplishment.
“I’m kind of like floating on air. I was 2-over, and then I was at 1-under. It was actually a pretty good day.”
“He was amazed, floating on cloud nine,” Cotten said. “It’s pretty rare to get a hole-in-one on a par-4. We figured he would have a good putt for an eagle. We’ve played a lot of rounds together, probably over 100. We started playing golf at Duncan Park, so it was pretty special.”
