VIDALIA — Late night visitors made a pilgrimage to First Baptist Church in Vidalia Saturday, but the evidence suggests their reason for visiting wasn’t prayer.

Vidalia police responded to a burglary report before services at the church Sunday.

The burglars apparently used bricks to try to break into the church at one location, but failed. They then moved to another window on the side of the church and were able to successfully enter the building, Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said.

The burglars attempted to take a television and a VCR out of a Sunday school room in the church but left the stolen goods behind the building, Hendricks said.

“The evidence that was left at the scene leads us to believe it is juveniles,” he said.

“They did a lot of pilfering and plundering, but it appears that they did not know what they were looking for. There were too many cabinet doors open.”

The police were able to lift numerous finger and palm prints from the glass at the church, and are keeping the television and VCR at the police station as evidence and to lift fingerprints, Hendricks said.

The matter is still under investigation, he said.
