JACKSON (AP) — A small group of Mississippi lawmakers continued discussing a state budget Friday, but still had not reached a final agreement late in the day.
Gov. Haley Barbour is expected to call the full House and Senate back to the Capitol for a special session in the next few days, but he’s waiting until negotiators set all details of a $5 billion spending plan.
The state fiscal year begins this coming Wednesday. Longtime Mississippi lawmakers say they can never remember starting a budget year without a spending plan in place.
Republican Barbour says he can run state government by executive order if no budget is ready by Wednesday.
