GREENVILLE (AP) — Fire officials say it was a hot stove left unattended that started a weekend fire that destroyed an apartment building in Greenville.

No residents were injured in Saturday morning’s blaze, but Capt. Donald Clay says four apartment units sustained heavy smoke, fire and water damage. He said the fire began after a resident living in a second-floor unit at Oakwood Apartments fell asleep while cooking.

After waking, the woman alerted other residents and everyone had vacated the building by the time fire trucks arrived at the scene.
