Parents take advantage of the Day in the District

NATCHEZ — In about 10 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, Jennifer Jones had her daughter registered for classes at Morgantown Elementary and her son’s transfer papers to Natchez High School completed.

“It’s like one-stop shopping,” Jones said of her trip to the Steckler Multipurpose Center.

Jones, like more than 600 other parents, visited the center for the Natchez-Adams School District’s, A Day in the District program.

The 12-hour event brought representatives from each of the district’s schools to one location and allowed parents to complete every aspect of registration.

Luvenia Gaylor, a parent liaison at Morgantown Elementary, said by mid-afternoon hundreds of parents had come in to register their children for school.

“This is set up to be as convenient as possible for parents. We want this to be easy,” Gaylor said. “Parents have a chance to find out what bus their children have been assigned, they can complete all the necessary lunch forms and parents of seniors can make sure their children are on track to graduate.”

Morgantown Elementary Principal Fred Marsalis said the event is also an excellent opportunity for parents to come in and meet some of the staff from the school their child will be attending.

“They can come an and see who they’ll be entrusting their child to. That’s important,” Marsalis said.

Marsalis said of all the parents he spoke with, most want to know what’s on their child supply list.

“Everybody wants to know what their kids need to have on the first day,” he said.

And while Marsalis said the event was an especially valuable chance for parents to meet staff, he also recognized the convenience for parents.

“This is made to be easy. And so far (parents) have taken advantage of it,” he said pointing to a stack of hundreds of manila envelopes, each containing a completed registration form.

And it won’t be long before each of those envelopes is represented by an actual student.

The first day of classes is Aug. 5.
