TUPELO (AP) — So many people offered building supplies to a man threatened with losing his home that the city of Tupelo has put them on a list for similar cases.
‘‘It was an outpouring of wonderful people in the city of Tupelo who wanted to help those in need,’’ building inspector Lynda Ford said. ‘‘I was just amazed at the outpouring.’’
The city had donated supplies to help the man fix his house and avoid demolition, but he was still 20 roofing squares short of the needed repairs.
Ford said Friday that phones started ringing the morning the Daily Journal published an article about houses found unfit for living, including that man’s. She says people wanted to give shingles, money, tools and manpower.
Anyone whose donation wasn’t needed will go on a list for calling in similar situations, so people can fix their homes and avoid demolition, Ford said.
Development Services Director B.J. Teal says it may expand to a program of benevolence and help.
‘‘My mind is racing with ideas of how we can develop a program of benevolence and help,’’ Teal said. ‘‘I think we could do so much internally with people helping people.’’
