WINNSBORO, La. — Ginny Daggett hit what proved to be the game-winning run with a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning as the Ferriday Dixie Belles 13-15 All-Stars defeated Grant Parish 2-1 Sunday night at the state tournament.

Daggett’s home run went over the fence in right centerfield and went 220 feet. However, Ferriday pitcher Ellen Bairnsfather had to get out of bases-loaded jam to preserve the win.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Grant Parish had the bases loaded and nobody out until Bairnsfather got the next batter to hit into a fielder’s choice and struck out the last two batters to end the game.

And it was the tight, low-scoring game that Ferriday Belles head coach Rut Horne expected.

“Good pitching will do that against the hitters. Grant had good pitching. We struck out nine times,” Horne said. “We only struck out three of their batters, but two of those were big.”

Ferriday used three pitchers in the game. Laura Perilloux pitched the first two innings, followed by Mollie Devening over the next three inning and Bairnsfather to close the game in the final two innings.

Daggett went 2-for-2 with a double to go with her home run and Bairnsfather had a double. The Ferriday Dixie Belles will take on JPRD in a winner’s bracket game today at 8 p.m. JPRD shut out host Winnsboro 12-0 Sunday.
