Ferriday Dixie Belles win one, lose two at World Series

SUMTER, S.C. — The Ferriday Dixie Belles got their first win in the 2009 World Series Sunday. But they also got their second loss, ending their season and sending them back to Louisiana.

Less than 24 hours after a tough opening-round loss to Florida at the Dixie Belles World Series, the girls wasted no time eliminating Texas from the tournament with a 10-1 win Sunday morning.

And unlike in its 8-5 loss to Florida, Ferriday played well in all three aspects of the game — hitting, pitching and defense.

Winning pitcher Laura Perilloux gave up one run in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be the only run given up by the trio of Perilloux, Mollie Devening and Ginny Daggett. Texas had just three hits in the game despite striking out just three times.

Perilloux and Devening each went two innings and Daggett pitched the final three innings.

Not a single batter for Texas drew a walk in the game and Ferriday’s defense committed no errors.

Ferriday got off to a hot start with four runs in the top of the first inning, including a three-run triple by Beard, and then tacked on three more runs an inning later for a commanding 7-1 lead.

Surprisingly, Ferriday didn’t score again until the top of the sixth inning when it scored two runs and then scored its final run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Ferriday had 12 hits in the game, with Daggett going 2-for-3 with a double and Devening as well as Savannah Johnston each going 2-for-3.

But they didn’t much time to celebrate that win as they had to play home team South Carolina Sunday afternoon.

And in that game, Ferriday jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play, only to see South Carolina rally in the final three innings for a dramatic 7-5 win to end Ferriday’s season.

Which meant for the second year in a row, the Ferriday Dixie Belles went 1-2 at the Dixie Belles World Series.

Ellen Bairnsfather gave up five runs on four hits and one walk in two innings and was the losing pitcher. Perilloux allowed just one hit and walked none in the first three innings. Devening allowed two runs on four hits and one walk in two innings.

“The girls played hard. We just weren’t able to punch any key runs across,” coach Rut Horne said.

Ferriday was the home team against South Carolina and got a three-run triple from Daggett in route to a 4-0 lead. That lead would increase to 5-0 in the bottom of the third and it appeared that Ferriday was on its way to extending its season.

“We played a lot of small ball in the first three innings. Maybe we got away from that,” Horne said. “If we had stayed with the small ball, better things would have happened.”

But South Carolina started its rally in the top of the fifth inning with a single, an infield error, a run-scoring single, and an RBI double by Angel Cox.

Daggett went 2-for-3 with the triple. Johnston and Devening also went 2-for-3 as Ferriday had eight hits in the game.

Ferriday had a chance to get out of the top of the sixth and seventh innings unscathed, but South Carolina would not let that happen as it took advantage of scoring opportunities with two outs in both innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, South Carolina tied the score at 5-5 thanks to a hit batsman, an RBI single, a walk and a two-run single. All three of those runs scored with two outs.

Then in the top of the seventh and with two outs, South Carolina took the lead on a single, a walk and a two-run single.

Ferriday would not go away quietly, however, as Devening led off with a single and advanced to third with two outs. But she would be stranded there as South Carolina held on for the win.

“We’ve got some real positive things out of this. Our complete infield is 13 and 14 years old, so they’ve got another year of eligibility,” Horne said. “We’ve got a couple of girls coming up from our Ponytail league that will help us. We need depth at pitching. We’re looking forward to next year already.”
