National Night Out set for tonight

NATCHEZ — This year’s National Night out Against Crime will be a little different for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

Traditionally the ASCO travels back and forth across the county to meet with various Neighborhood Watch groups.

However, this year, and following with the wishes of former Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown, the Neighborhood Watch and ACSO will meet in one spot.

From 6 to 8 p.m. today county residents will be able to meet with members of the ACSO at the sheriff’s firing range on Foster Mound Road.

Interim Sheriff Angie Brown said meeting in a central location would allow the sheriff’s deputies to spend more time meeting with county residents and less time traveling.

Starting at 4 p.m. the Natchez Police Department will travel to locations in Ferriday and Vidalia then back to Natchez as part of their Night Out participation.

Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said police will have a valuable chance to meet with the public at eight Neighborhood Watch groups across the city.

Mullins also said the Night Out is also an opportunity for neighbors to meet each other.

“When neighbors know each other they’re more likely to look after each other’s property. It’s like an extra set of eyes for us,” he said.

And there’s one critical group Mullins hopes to make contact with tonight — the children.

Mullins said Night Out affords police an opportunity to meet with the city’s young people on positive terms.

“We want to be able to show them we’re in this community to help them,” he said.

The Vidalia Police Department will leave Vidalia Junior High School at approximately 3:30 p.m. to begin their community meetings.
