TUPELO — Services for Roy Thomas O’Shields, 69, who died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at the Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, Fla., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Max Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at the Tupelo Memorial Park under the direction of Pegues Funeral Home in Tupelo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday, both at the funeral home.
Mr. O’Shields was born Feb. 21, 1940, in Tupelo, the son of Enoch L. and Mary Jean O’Shields. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired from Trustmark National Bank as an executive vice president in January 2003. He was a graduate of the Midsouth School of Banking, the School of Banking of the South and the National Installment Lending School.
A staunch supporter of the University of Southern Mississippi, he served as an alumni district committeeman, the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association Board of Directors and was a lifetime commitment member of the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association. His civic accomplishments included having served as president of the Bruce, Mississippi Lions Club, member of the Columbus Kiwanis Club, member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, president of the Calhoun Academy and Columbus Christian School Boards, campaign chairman of Bruce and Calhoun County United Way, campaign chairman of Lowndes County United Way and president of the board of directors of Lowndes County United Way.
His first and foremost commitment was to this Lord. In that commitment, he served as deacon and as an elder in the Columbus Church of Christ. He was a member of the Church of Christ of West Orange in Winter Garden, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John H. O’Shields.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patricia Starnes O’Shields; one daughter, Shannon O’Shields Shelton; two grandchildren, Bret and Chandler Shelton, all of Clermont, Fla.; one sister, Jennie Boone and husband, Howard, of Tupelo; one brother, Wayne O’Shields and wife, Ramona, of Memphis, Tenn.; three nieces; one nephew; seven great-nephews; one great-niece; and two great-great-nephews.
