AMITE, La. — The two-time defending state champions aren’t supposed to open the season with a loss, much less a shutout.

But opponent Oak Forest Academy didn’t seem too worried about Centreville Academy’s history Friday night. In fact, it likely motivated them.

Even though this game was a non-district game for the first time in several years, the Yellow Jackets were hoping to avenge their two losses from last year to the Tigers — especially the South State title game that the Tigers held on to win by three points.

They did just that and even did something very few teams have done to Centreville (0-1) during the Bill Hurst era; shut them out for all four quarters, as they stunned the Tigers 12-0.

“Turnovers plagued us. We had five turnovers,” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said. “We had a touchdown called back on clipping. We weren’t ready to play. We got out-coached and out-played.”

WOODVILLE — Led by the running of Tip McKenzie and the passing of Todd Gonda, Wilkinson County Christian Academy rolled to an easy win over Christian Home Educators Fellowship Friday night.

McKenzie had 15 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was on an 87-yard run on WCCA’s second play from scrimmage in the first quarter that got things going for the Rams. He was also the team’s leading receiver with three catches for 69 yards.

Gonda played the first three quarters and completed four of seven passes for 110 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Matthew McGraw in the first quarter as WCCA (1-0) jumped out to a 20-0 lead before the Patriots scored their only touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run by Ronald Brown at the end of the first quarter.

Gonda also scored on a three-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and made a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 23-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.

In addition to his touchdown catch, McGraw had 10 carries for 107 yards and was the team’s leading tackler with nine.
