VIDALIA — Senior citizens get hungry around lunchtime. The Concordia Parish Council on Aging wants to feed them lunch. It’s a marriage made in heaven.

The Council on Aging’s Vidalia meal site has openings for seniors who want to participate in the lunch program, which serves lunch at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The only criteria for those who want to participate in the program is that they be 60 years old and able to go to the site, which is located at 411 Texas St., in Vidalia, Council on Aging Director Dorothy McDonald said.

“The criteria is not income based,” she said.

The lunch program is funded through federal and state grants, she said.

“The lunches are free but we do ask for a dollar contribution for those who are able to contribute so we can serve more people,” McDonald said.

The meals served meet U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition guidelines, and usually include milk, vegetables and fruit along with the daily entrée, she said.

Transportation to the meal site is available by the Council on Aging bus, which McDonald said runs in the Vidalia area to Airport Road on the west and does not run to the south of Vidalia.

To apply for the program, potential participants need only bring proof of a Social Security number and their birth date to the Vidalia office of the Council on Aging in the old Vidalia courthouse between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Ferriday lunch site does not have any openings at this time, but McDonald said the program can still accept applications for the Ferriday program for future reference.
