Woodville — Wilkinson County High School was down 34-29 going into the fourth quarter of its game against Raymond last Friday.

The Wildcats’ Delvin Fosselman came through in the final minutes, however, scoring a touchdown on a 32-yard carry to put them ahead 35-34.

The Wildcats’ lead would hold, as their defense held Raymond scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Wilkinson County head coach Elbert Lyles said the difference on Friday was his team being able to make just enough big plays.

“We made a few of them and had some guys step up towards the end,” Lyles said. “That’s what made the difference.”

Lyles gave a lot of credit to his defense, which stepped up in the second half after Raymond scored three quick touchdowns right before halftime.

“Raymond hit us with a couple of passes in the second quarter,” Lyles said. “I’d say within six to eight minutes they got 21 points on us.

“We kind of talked with the team a bit during halftime, and we came back out and did a lot better protecting against the pass.”

Team conditioning is also something Lyles credited his players with in being able to come through late in the game.

“We’re at a point where we feel like we should be well-conditioned, and it played a part in being able to finish,” Lyles said. “We had a problem finishing games last year, and I think we’ve played much better in the second half these first two games, even against Natchez (High School).”

Wilkinson County (1-1) will now turn its attention to Prentiss Senior High School, which it will host Friday. Lyles said the message he wants to get across to his players is that last week’s win has no bearing on the game Friday.

“No doubt, to win this past Friday, it meant a lot to the kids,” Lyles said. “I may feel good about the win, but at the same time, that’s last Friday, and it’s time to move forward.”

Prentiss’ offense will force the Wildcats’ defense to stick with their assignments and remain mentally disciplined.

“They do a good bit of option, so we’re trying to practice for defending the option right now,” Lyles said. “You just have to rep and rep in practice and make sure to take care of your assignment.”

Lyles also said the Prentiss defense will force quarterback Brian Montgomery and the offensive line to constantly remain alert throughout the game.

“They run what’s called a 3-5-3 defense, with five linebackers and a lot of blitzing,” Lyles said. “We will have to make sure to block well and protect our quarterback, because they’ll be putting pressure on us every play.”
