NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal head coach David King was wary of Alpha Christian School’s offensive abilities leading into their matchup last Friday.

The Saints defense took care of business, however, and held Alpha Christian scoreless, winning 48-0.

“Defensively, we played outstanding (last Friday),” David said. “They were an extremely athletic team, and it was an extremely athletic contest. Our kids were focused, and put a lot of pressure on their quarterback.

“Our pass rush was a big key in that game. We forced three interceptions and dropped two more (that should have been interceptions).”

Kent King led in rushing for Trinity with 120 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. R.J. Fleming had 83 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns.

David said King’s performance in the game Friday was a testament to his versatility.

“Kent’s an outstanding athlete,” David said. “Everyone we play has to account for him. Of course, everyone’s keying in on R.J., but Kent’s a competitor, and feeds off of R.J. being the focal point.”

David also said the performance of running back/wide receiver Brandon Daggs, who scored three touchdowns against Alpha Christian, is a tremendous boost for his offense.

“The thing about Daggs and Kent is, they could be 2,000-yard rushers on other teams,” King said. “They’re totally unselfish.”

Kent gave his supporting cast all the credit for his big game against Alpha Christian.

“Our line had a really big game, and our coaches gave us a great game plan,” Kent said. “It was a team effort.”

Kent also said he doesn’t mind complementing Fleming as a runner.

“It helps him out when (Daggs and I) are able to make big plays,” Kent said. “It opens things up for him.”

This Friday, the Saints (4-0) will travel to Porters Chapel Academy in Vicksburg.

“Over the last four years, they’ve won 11 games or more,” David said. “This year, they’ve been hit hard with injuries. I think they have five starters out for our game.

“I’ve told our players, however, that when you’re used to winning like Porters Chapel is, they’re not just going to roll over after we score a couple of quick touchdowns. They’re going to play hard the whole game.”

Kent said a big key for the Saints Friday would be setting the tone early.

“We have to come out and play as hard as we can,” Kent said. “Hopefully we can have the opportunity to get our second team some experience in the second half.”

If there’s anything David feels might be an Achilles heel to his team, it’s special teams. David said he’s working to fix the one breakdown in the kicking game his team seems to have each week.

“It’s the same story since I’ve been coaching here,” David said.

“We’ll have two good efforts in kickoff coverage and one bad one. It’s also the same with kickoff returns, two good ones and a bad one. I’ve told my players that those bad ones can come back to hurt us eventually.”
