MONROE, La. — Nicholas Leehy’s 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Aaron Thibodeaux proved to be big as St. Frederick survived the elements and a pesky Cathedral team for a 14-6 win Friday night.
Even though the Warriors dominated the Green Wave in terms of first downs — 17 to 8 — and rushing yards, 151 to just 34, they almost lost the game thanks to three lost fumbles.
Yet St. Frederick (2-1) turned to its defense to keep the Warriors not only in the game, but in the lead. The Warriors held Cathedral (0-3) to just 131 yards of total offense and intercepted two Dylan White passes.
Christian Sager broke a 0-0 tie with a 2-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Cathedral answered early in the fourth quarter when Tyler Fleming scored on a 2-yard run. The extra point was no good and the Green Wave trailed 7-6 until the Warriors scored their touchdown to give them the eventual hard-fought, eight-point win.
White went 8-of-16 passing for 97 yards and Daniel Huffines was Cathedral’s leading receiver with four catches for 51 yards. Fleming had 11 carries for 35 yards. Defensively, Linebacker JaDarius Ealey was a force for the Green Wave in this game. He had 10 solo tackles and nine assists. Cornerback Charles Lee had seven solo tackles, five assists and one fumble recovery.
