MONROE, La. — Friday night’s game between Trinity Episcopal, the top-ranked team in Class A, and River Oaks, ranked No. 6 in the MAIS Class AA top 10 poll, could have been viewed as a possible trap game for the Saints.
Earlier in the week, Trinity head coach David King said there would be no letdown after a 40-19 win at homecoming over Central Private a week earlier nor would the Saints be looking ahead to their home game against Brookhaven Academy next week.
After all, this is the second of four straight games against Class AA competition for Trinity Episcopal. River Oaks used a balanced offensive attack and took advantage of miscues in special teams to upset the Saints 27-25.
“My job is to get my team ready to play and I didn’t,” King said. “We didn’t match their intensity and we didn’t execute. And that’s the coach’s responsibility.”
River Oaks quarterback Ryan MacGregor accounted for two touchdowns, the first on a 1-yard run early in the first quarter and the second a 35-yard pass to Walker Thurman late in the second quarter that gave the Mustangs a 27-13 halftime lead.
Trinity Episcopal (6-1) got back in the game in the second half as R.J. Fleming caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Givonni Dent with 8:54 to go in the third quarter and Dent threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Chas Moroney with 4:20 to in the ball game.
But the kicking game proved to be the difference in the game’s outcome. After Fleming scored on a 5-yard run with 26 seconds to go in the first quarter, the Saints bobbled the snap on the extra point.
Moroney made the extra point after Brandon Daggs’ 25-yard touchdown run with 9:16 remaining until halftime, but he missed the extra point after the Dent-to-Fleming touchdown pass in the third quarter. The Saints went for the 2-point conversion after the Dent-to-Moroney scoring pass in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game at 27-all, but the pass was incomplete and River Oaks (6-1) escaped with the win.
MacGregor completed 9 of 14 passes for 185 yards while the Mustangs had 145 total rushing yards. The Saints, on the other hand, were held to just 51 yards passing and 265 yards of total offense. Fleming had 16 carries for 105 yards and Daggs added 56 yard rushing on nine carries.
