NATCHEZ — The NAACP and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are sponsoring a sheriff’s forum that will begin at Reflections, formerly known as the Brick House, at 6:30 tonight.

“What we’re tying to do is help people figure out who they want to know and who they want to vote for,” Angela Hutchins said.

Hutchins — who serves as chairperson for Delta Sigma Theta’s political awareness and involvement committee — said each of the eight sheriff candidates was invited to attend tonight’s forum, but said as of Wednesday, only Constable Ray Brown had confirmed his participation.

Katie Moore, a member of Natchez’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, had a hand in organizing tonight’s event.

Moore said she hopes for a high turnout for the candidates and the community.

“I hope that we have a crowd and that we also have an audience that will appreciate the candidates,” Moore said.

Moore said the forum’s setup would be much like the Democratic Party forum that took place Sept. 30, but would only have two moderators in charge of asking questions and overseeing debate.

Jessie Turner and Hutchins will lead tonight’s political discussion.

Hutchins said as moderators, she and Turner will allow each candidate three minutes to answer each of the questions that have been prepared to better acquaint the community with their candidates.

“A lot of (candidates) are not known in the community, and this will give people a chance to make up their minds about who is the best candidate,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins said the forum is not expected to last longer than two hours.

Reflections is located at 1187 Martin Luther King Jr. Road.
