FAYETTE — Friday night’s Region 7-3A game between the top-ranked Tylertown Chiefs and the Jefferson County Tigers was supposed to have been a mismatch between two teams going in opposite directions.
Instead, the battle between the undefeated Chiefs and a Tigers team trying just to keep its playoff hopes alive turned into a much closer game than many expected as Tylertown took a 19-6 win.
Tylertown (8-0, 3-0) scored on a 1-yard run by Didriquez Smith in the first quarter, a 10-yard run from Jameion Lewis in the second quarter and an 11-yard run by T.O. Robinson in the third quarter.
Jefferson County (3-5, 2-1) got its only touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Elbert Ford. The Tigers had some success moving the ball on the Chiefs’ defense, but could not score on them until it was too late.
Quarterback Kiwaski Tenner completed 8-of-18 passes for 95 yards with no interceptions. The Tigers finished with 244 yards of total offense and only turned the ball over once. Davian Noble had three catches for 27 yards and he had an interception.
Block 33, St. Mary 0
JONESVILLE — The biggest upset of the season among local and area teams took place Friday night as the Block Bears stunned the fourth-ranked St. Mary Tigers in a pivotal District 3-1A contest.
“Our kids were so excited and focused. They played up to their potential. I thought we had one of the best teams in the state (in Class 1A),” Block head coach Benny Vault said.
St. Mary came into this game tied for fourth with Haynesville as well as undefeated. It left the game wondering what went so terribly wrong. The Tigers were held to just 68 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times.
Block (4-3, 2-0) broke a scoreless ball game when Preston Bowman took it in from the 6-yard line.
Travis Barber’s extra point made it 7-0 with 1:55 to go until halftime.
Andre Calhoun caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Curdarius Johnson and Bowman scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter to give the Bears a surprising 20-0 lead. Antione Bowie scored on a 64-yard interception return and added a 3-yard touchdown run late in the game.
Johnson completed 3-of-7 passes for 37 yards while Bowie had 11 carries for 69 yards.
St. Mary (6-1, 1-1) couldn’t get anything going offensively thanks to a swarming Bears defense.
“We played great defense. We had a long week of film We had a real good game plan,” Vault said. “This is the first week we’ve had everybody healthy since the Ferriday game. We got everybody focused on football.”
Hazlehurst 53,
Wilkinson County 32
WOODVILLE — Hazlehurst jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as the Indians defeated the Wildcats for their first win in Region 7-3A this season.
By halftime, Hazlehurst (6-3, 1-2) had a commanding 35-6 lead. Wilkinson County (3-5, 0-3), which hosted the Indians for homecoming Friday night, outscored them 20-12 in the third quarter but still trailed 47-26. But the Wildcats simply ran out of gas and the 21-point deficit was too big of a hole to get out of.
