BOGUE CHITTO — It hasn’t been the season the Green Wave would have dreamed of, but it’s not over yet, and things started looking up Friday night.

A 34-24 victory over Bogue Chitto means the Region 4-1A playoffs are still within reach for Cathedral.

Charles Lee and Dylan White led the Green Wave as they jumped out to a 34-12 halftime lead and held on for the win.

Lee had two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown while White threw three touchdown passes as Cathedral (2-6, 2-3) jumped to the 22-point halftime lead.

“The first half was the best we’ve played all year, both offensively and defensively,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “It was a big win. It kept us in the chance for making the hunt in the playoffs.

“Charles Lee ran the ball real hard and Dylan White did a good job throwing the ball. He did a good job running the clock and the receivers did a good job making plays after the catch.”

White threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Lee early in the first quarter and then he connected with Daniel Huffines on a 30-yard touchdown pass to give the Green Wave a 14-0 lead.

James Blackwell scored the first of his two touchdown runs just 36 seconds into the second quarter on a 3-yard run, but the extra point was no good and Bogue Chitto (3-6, 2-3) trailed 14-6.

After the kickoff, Lee broke through for a 68-yard touchdown run and Cole Mann’s third extra point of the game put Cathedral on top 21-6. The Bobcats would not go away as Byron Kersee scored on a 9-yard run to make it a 21-12 game.

But the Green Wave had another answer — this time with two touchdowns in less than two minutes. First, White threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Foster at the 3:42 mark of the second quarter and Lee scored on a 35-yard run with 1:44 to go until halftime.

Lee finished with 115 yards rushing on just six carries and White completed 11 of 14 passes with no interceptions for 169 yards. Once again, though, the Bobcats would try to get back in the game. Kersee scored on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter and Blackwell scored on a 4-yard run with 6:36 left in the ball game. But Huffines who had 101 total yards from scrimmage, made a big play on defense as he intercepted a pass on what turned out to be Bogue Chitto’s last possession to preserve the 10-point win.

“It was just a good overall team effort,” Beesley said. “We knew we were going to have to stop their misdirection running. We were trying to run the clock. I was pleased with our front eight. We gave up a couple of big plays, but we played well.”
