Cathedral’s Friday win a ‘beautiful sight’

NATCHEZ — In a year in which the Cathedral School football team has struggled to put points on the board, last Friday’s game against Bogue Chitto was a beautiful sight for Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley.
Cathedral (2-6, 2-3) tallied 331 yards of total offense in its 34-24 win over Bogue Chitto School. Charles Lee led in rushing for the Green Wave with 115 yards on six carries, and quarterback Dylan White was 11-of-14 in passing for 169 yards.
All of Cathedral’s points came in the first half, and Beesley said he was very pleased with the offense’s performance in the first and second quarters.
“The first half (of that game) is probably the best we’ve played all year. Charles Lee did a good job running, Dylan White did a good job passing and the receivers did a good job breaking tackles.”
It was a breath of fresh air for Beesley, he said, to see the offensive output he saw Friday, in a season where he and his coaching staff have been making constant adjustments to the offense from week to week.
“We’ve been adding wrinkles here and there,” Beesley said. “Also, it was really the first game on dry ground all year (for us). A lot of things factored in (to the offense performing well).”
Despite the rough season it’s been for Cathedral overall at this point, Beesley said he’s proud of his kids for not giving up, and is happy to see that dedication finally paying off.
“It shows that there’s good leadership here in our senior class. They never give up. Despite all the bad breaks this season, they still work hard every day.
“Our seniors have instilled that work ethic into our younger guys, which makes me hopeful about the future (of this program).”
With the win, Cathedral has improved its chances of sneaking into the playoffs.
“If we can win both of these last two, we’ll automatically get in,” Beesley said.
One local coach who isn’t paying attention to playoff scenarios is Natchez High School head coach Lance Reed — and that approach seems to be paying off.
The Bulldogs (6-3, 3-2) defeated Terry High School 34-3 behind a strong defensive showing, and Reed said his mindset of not worrying about playoff scenarios is helping his players focus.
“After the Brandon loss (a few weeks ago), I felt like we didn’t have the focus we needed to,” Reed said. “We want to put all of our energy on the team at hand.”
Reed added that he was happy with the way his team performed in the trenches after watching film on the game Saturday.
“I was pleased with the physical game we played up front,” Reed said. “That’s really important to be physical and win the battle at the line of scrimmage.”
Elsewhere, Trinity Episcopal School (7-3, 2-0) ended a three-game losing skid Friday when it defeated Tallulah Academy 38-19.
Trinity’s R.J. Fleming and Brandon Daggs both rushed for over 100 yards in the Saints’ win. Fleming had 114 yards on the ground and Daggs tallied 104 yards rushing.
Adams County Christian School (5-5, 1-3) fell to defending state champion Centreville Academy 35-12. ACCS had 333 yards of total offense, but managed just two touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Rebels’ Brandon Sanders had 109 yards rushing on 13 carries, and quarterback Kent Yates was 5-for-19 in passing with 70 yards and one interception.
