Turnovers haunt Rams

WOODVILLE — Nothing frustrates a football team more than drive-killing turnovers, and Wilkinson County Christian Academy was victimized by those repeatedly in its game against Huntington School last Friday.
The Rams (4-5, 0-3) lost to the Hounds 28-14 in a game where WCCA lost three fumbles and threw two interceptions.
“We seemed to have a problem with turning the ball over,” WCCA head coach Sam Byrd said. “They protected the ball well and did some good things. We moved the ball well, but couldn’t get it into the end zone.
“I thought our defense played well, but we have to hold onto the football. My kids never quit, though. They kept battling, and I was pleased with them about that.”
This Friday, the Rams will host Silliman Institute for their final home game of the season. WCCA plans to honor its seniors Friday with Senior Night.
Byrd said the leadership of the seniors both on and off the field has been a major plus for his team this season.
“Our quarterback, Todd Gonda, has been a great player and senior for us,” Byrd said. “On defense, Trey McCants is the main guy who sets the tone for us. He’s an aggressive player who plays hard, and is our top tackler.
“Center Hayden Holden is also a senior. Everything really starts with him on offense. He’s dependable, and we couldn’t have done it without him. Matthew McGraw has rushed for over 600 yards and played for us on defense. Hayden Whetstone has been good for us at receiver.”
With Silliman, Byrd said he expects to see a formidable power running game come against the Rams.
They’re a tough, tough bunch of kids,” Byrd said. “Their quarterback runs the offense well and their line blocks well.
“They run out of the I-Formation and have a good tailback and fullback. We’re definitely going to have to step up on the defensive line and allow our linebackers to make tackles.”
If WCCA wants to come out on top, Byrd said it would have to establish its own running game.
“Everyone knows we try to use sweeps and misdirection to attack the corners,” Byrd said. “We want to run it as much as we can to loosen things up and open up the passing game. Those are our goals for Friday night.”
Kickoff for the game is set for 7 p.m.
