CENTREVILLE — Last year, Central Private got past Centreville 13-12 to win the District 5-AA championship. However, the Tigers got the last laugh as they won their second straight Class AA State title.

On Friday night, Centreville avenged that heartbreaking defeat to Central Private with the district title on the line between these two rivals for the second consecutive season, 34-12.

The game featured two of the best running backs in the entire MAIS in Centreville’s Zach Sinclair and Central Private’s Bobby Muse. And the two did not disappoint as Sinclair finished with 172 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries while Muse had 20 carries for 122 yards.

However, the Tigers had more weapons on offense and that proved to be a big factor. Beau Field scored on a 33-yard run with 8:02 to go in the first quarter. Sinclair then had touchdown runs of 16 yards late in the first quarter and 1 yard early in the second quarter to give Centreville (8-3, 4-0) a 19-0 lead.

Colby Lockwood recovered a fumble in the end zone and Tyler Towles threw to Cliff Hurst on the two-point conversion for a 27-0 lead with 2:57 to go in the second quarter. The Tigers were not done yet. Hurst connected with Lockwood on an 11-yard touchdown pass for a commanding 34-0 halftime lead.

Central Private (8-2, 3-1), which hadn’t lost since Week 6 at Trinity Episcopal, did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. Jason Young scored on a 16-yard run with 9:19 to go and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass on the game’s last play.

Centreville will host Glenbrook in the first round of the Class AA South State Playoffs next Friday at 7 p.m.

Silliman 8, WCCA 6

WOODVILLE — Nick Ohlinger scored on an 18-yard touchdown run and scored on the ensuing two-point conversion run with 8:28 to go in the third quarter as the Wildcats rallied to defeat the Rams in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

The win was crucial for Silliman (6-4, 2-2) as it secured the Wildcats one of the two wild card berths for the Class AA South State Playoffs. WCCA needed a win and a lot of help to get in the playoffs, but the Rams were not able to hold on to a 6-0 lead.

Matthew McGraw scored on a 17-yard run late in the first quarter, but he did not return in the second half because on an ankle injury. Tip McKenzie was held to just 23 yards on 10 carries for WCCA (4-6, 0-4).

The Wildcats won the game despite losing the turnover battle four to two and having zero passing yards. The difference was their defense, which allowed just 78 yards of total offense and five first downs.
