Block seeks perfection in district play

JONESVILLE — Block High School did not let its early season tribulations carry over into district play, clinching the District 3-1A title last week with an 18-0 win over LaSalle High School.

Despite having to forfeit the first two games of the season due to an ineligible player, Block has managed to go undefeated in district play so far this year.

With one game left in the regular season, however, Bears head coach Benny Vault Jr. said he would like to finish taking care of business in the district.

Block (4-5, 4-0) will host Tensas High School Thursday, giving the Bears a chance to finish the season undefeated against their district.

“We’ve already beaten the two teams that are in second place, but we just don’t want any blemishes on (our district schedule),” Vault said.

Vault added that his team is feeling a sense of accomplishment in netting the district championship, especially in light of having to forfeit two non-district games.

“We’re fired up,” Vault said. “We set about four or five goals this past offseason, and one of them was being district champ. The kids are really excited about it, especially after the turmoil at the beginning of the season.”

The Bears look to match up against Tensas very well, Vault said.

“They’ve got some good athletes. They always have good athletes. They have speed at the skill positions, and have played some really close games. They move the ball well on offense, but I think they’ve had someproblems with turnovers.

“We have good quickness at our skill positions also, so I think we should be able to counter their speed with our speed.”

A big reason the Bears are undefeated in their district games is their staunch defense, which has held opponents to low yardage the last few games they’ve played.

“We’ve been getting better every week (on defense),” Vault said. “We’ve made some changes and put different people at different positions.

“We’re playing with a sense of pride. We don’t want anyone to score. The last four games, we’ve held opponents to under 100 yards (of total offense).”

Kickoff at Block will be at 7 p.m. Thursday.
