NATCHEZ — The Huntington School varsity girls got off to a sluggish start in its first regular season game, losing 63-28 against Parklane Academy in the ACCS Girls Tip-off Tournament Monday.
The Lady Hounds were unable to get anything going offensively, and finished the game with no players scoring in double-digits.
Huntington head coach Edwin White said his team’s struggles can be attributed to youth, and added that he saw some positives from the game despite the loss.
“Basically, we’re a young team trying to find our chemistry, our footing and common ground,” White said.
“We’re coming along, but are still making mistakes, which is what you expect from a young team. I thought we did a good job on defense, but had a lot of mental mistakes, especially passing the ball.
“Again, these are things you expect with a young team. I think that when we gain confidence, we’ll start getting better.”
Abi Brown led in scoring for the Lady Hounds with nine points. Abbey Ashmore, Natali Tarver and Alli Booth each finished the game with four points.
Kristen Havard scored three points and Brookelin May and Brianna Wright each had two points.
“I thought we had good leadership from Kristen and Abi, our seniors,” White said.
“I also think our sophomores, Alli, Natali and Abbey, are beginning to come together as a unit. I feel like, with time, that connection will come along.”
Huntington was down 40-20 at the half, and didn’t score any points in the third quarter. It wasn’t until 7:27 to go in the fourth quarter that Wright sank a 2-pointer, but the Hounds were already down 51-22.
With 3:10 to go in the fourth, Parklane pulled its starters and let the backups finish the game.
Maggie Paulk led Parklane in scoring with 22 points on the evening. Kellen Choate and Emily Alford each added eight points, and Ashton Aldridge tallied seven points for Parklane.
Huntington (0-1) will play in the tournament again Saturday against Amite School Center. The junior varsity girls will tip off at 9 a.m. and the varsity girls at 10:15 a.m.
