Bulldogs put win behind them

MEADVILLE — Despite Franklin County High School’s impressive win over Velma Jackson High School last Friday, Bulldogs head coach Trent Hammond said he isn’t thinking about that game anymore.
Franklin County defeated Velma Jackson 33-0 in the first round of the Class 3A South State playoffs last week, and some people might look to that start as a momentum-builder for the rest of the postseason.
Not Hammond’s Bulldogs, however. Staying true to his “one week at a time” mindset, he said he’s not taking anything for granted just because of a first-round victory.
“I don’t know what it does for our momentum,” Hammond said. “We have to put that (win) behind us. It was a great way to come out and play last week, and the kids played exceptionally hard, but it only gets tougher (from here on out).”
Franklin County is set to play Philadelphia High School Friday, a team fresh off a 38-0 win over St. Patrick’s High School last week.
“They’re extremely big,” Hammond said. “They have a huge offensive line that really gets after you. They have a tailback that has scored either 25 or 26 touchdowns this season. They like to run right at you and challenge you.”
Like the Bulldogs, Philadelphia looks to bring a strong defense into the matchup Friday.
“They have a big defensive line, and a linebacker that’s being recruited by Mississippi State who plays in the middle (of the field),” Hammond said.
“They play physical and score a ton of points, so we’re going to have to be able to come out, execute and take care of the football. We’re going to have to play the same kind of football we’ve been playing the past few weeks.”
That play will be especially important for the Bulldogs’ offensive line. Last Friday, they opened up holes all night against Velma Jackson, allowing Darnell Ford and Jermaine Stander to both accumulate over 100 yards rushing.
“Our performance last Friday means that our offensive line is executing the way the coaches have taught them all week, and all year,” Hammond said. “They’re getting to where they’re supposed to be and making blocks.”
In addition, Hammond said he’s also pleased with the job the coaching staff has done with the Bulldogs’ defense the last few weeks.
“Our defense ha played great the last few weeks. Coach (Adam) Barron has them going in the right direction. He’s coming up with a great game plan and the kids are going out and executing.”
The Bulldogs (9-3) will play at 7 p.m. Friday.
