NATCHEZ — Chuck Mayfield is leading, but the runoff election for Adams County sheriff is still too close to call.

Only 221 votes separate Mayfield from Ray Brown.

Another 833 absentee ballots remain to be counted.

Mayfield has 4,974 votes or 51.14 percent. Brown has 4,753 votes or 48.86 percent.

Elections commissioners have said absentee ballot counting won’t begin until next week.
