For the beleaguered Griswolds of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” it was a long way down the holiday road.

But Natchez families and those in all surrounding counties and parishes, won’t don’t have to suffer the same fate this year.

The perfect Christmas tree, carolers and holiday fun is right downtown for all to enjoy.

“Christmas in Natchez: City of Lights” kicks off Friday with the official Christmas tree lighting.

But before the 30-foot tall tree blazes, locals can participate in a turkey gumbo cook-off at 4 p.m. downtown.

The band Osgood & Blaque will provide entertainment from 4 to 5:30 and 6:30 to 8 p.m. The tree lighting will be at 6.

Downtown shops are staying open until 8 p.m. Friday, so bring your wallets along.

Christmas festivities continue all season long with daily caroling around the Christmas tree, house tours, parties and special entertainment.

A complete schedule of events can be found at natchezatchristmas.com.

The new Christmas tourism season is a push to keep locals spending dollars at home and visitors coming to Natchez for the holidays.

New wreaths and garland line the downtown streets, and all residents are encouraged to decorate their yards for Christmas, or at least leave a porch light on.

Holiday road? It’s right here. Let’s enjoy.
