Natchez — Cathedral School third-grade students participated in a Reader’s Theaterplay that was called “A Happy Thanksgiving Harvest.” The play was about twopilgrim children and two American Indian children discussing the Thanksgiving feast between their people.
Students practiced all week during their reading time and at home with their parents. Jessica Carter’s students then performed in front of their parents and other students.
The students made the backdrop and some of their costumes.
In a reader’s theater play, students do not have to memorize their parts. The purpose of a reader’s theater is for students to practice oral reading fluency, following along silently, listening for oral cues and is a great opportunity for public speaking at a young age.
The characters included Strong Bear and American Indian boy; Little Doe American Indian girl; John, pilgrim boy and Sarah, pilgrim girl. There was also a narrator.
