Natchez Fire Department and Atmos Energy officials are investigating an early morning gas explosion that burned a Maple Street apartment Wednesday.
No injuries were reported.
Natchez Fire Marshal Aaron Wesley said firefighters responded to a 3 a.m. Wednesday call from a neighbor reporting an explosion inside a building in the 800 block of Maple Street.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, the second floor, north apartment was engulfed in flames. Firefighters found no one in the apartment at the time.
The fire is under investigation by both Natchez Fire investigators and Atmos officials. Wesley said gas explosions are a rare occurrence and officials are trying to pinpoint what may have led to the explosion. Officials are interviewing witnesses, the building owner and the current renters of the apartment.
Atmos officials will not comment on the incident until their investigation is complete.
