Weekend filled with Christmas parades in parish

FERRIDAY — Concordia Parish residents will have the opportunity to attend seasonal parades twice this weekend.
In Ferriday, the Ferriday Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas parade will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, with lineup starting at 9 a.m. at Ferriday High School, parade contact Rena Pitts said.
And it’s not too late for those who want to enter a float in the parade.
“We are still looking for more families, churches and business floats,” Pitts said.
Those who want to enter a float in the parade can go by the Delta Music Museum and pick up a form, or can call the chamber at 318-757-9999 and leave a message with their name and intention of entering a float, she said.
The theme of the Ferriday parade will be “Santa’s Workshop,” and the grand marshal will be Tiffany Lloyd, a Ferriday native who was second runner-up in the 2009 Miss Black USA pageant.
The only requirement for the parade is that all floats be at least 50 percent decorated, Pitts said.
“We’re also asking that the only parade float with a Santa be the Chamber of Commerce Santa,” she said. “We don’t want to confuse the children with more than one.”
The floats in the parade will be judged in two categories, floats with trailers that are 14-feet or longer, and floats smaller than 14-feet long.
“That way, a small float will not be judged against a large float,” Pitts said.
The prizes will be $100, $50 and $25 for the first, second and third place floats in the large category, and $50, $25 and $15 for the first, second and third places in the small category.
“We just want to encourage every vehicle to be decorated for the Christmas season,” Pitts said.
The parade will leave Ferriday High traveling eastward on E.E. Wallace Boulevard, and will turn left onto Louisiana Avenue.
From Louisiana Avenue, the parade will turn left on First Street and then return to the high school.
In Vidalia, the Christmas parade, organized by the Vidalia Women’s Club, will be 3 p.m. Sunday.
Those who want to enter the parade don’t have to worry about registration or entry fees, they only need to show up at the starting point, said Heather Lancaster with the Vidalia Women’s Club.
The theme of the parade will be “All I Want for Christmas,” and the grand marshal will be Cliff Merritt.
“(Merritt) does a lot for our club,” Lancaster said. “Anytime we ask, he helps.”
Lineup for the parade will begin at 2 p.m. at Vidalia Upper Elementary.
The parade will proceed from Vidalia Upper on Concordia Avenue until it intersects with Carter Street, and will proceed down Carter Street until it reaches Murray Drive, where the parade will end at Vidalia High School.
