MONTEREY — The Cathedral School varsity boys have continued to do what they’ve done for the last few games: Play a sluggish first half and recover with a strong second half.

In the first round of the Monterey Invitational tournament Thursday, the Green Wave did just that as they edged Adams County Christian School 59-52.

“The difference in the second half for us was, we played much better defense and rebounded better,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said.

“We just did not come out with any energy or effort in the first half. We scored 15 points in the first half and 44 in the second half. Luckily, we did enough to win tonight, but we have to do a better job of starting games.”

Carl Hammitte led in scoring for Cathedral with 19 points. Collin Hammons added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Charles Lee tallied 10 points.

For ACCS, Daniel Guedon finished with 19 points. Bryce Murray added 10 points.

Cathedral (3-2) will play in the tournament semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Despite the Lady Rebels’ bad luck with shots Thursday, a strong defensive performance helped them pull through against Hattiesburg.

“I felt like our defense was the difference tonight,” ACCS varsity girls head coach Melanie Hall said.

“I thought they did a good job tonight. I felt like we got a lot of good looks early in the game, but our shuts just weren’t falling in.

“Sometimes things just go that way on offense, but you can always play defense and rebound.”

Taylor Welch led ACCS in scoring with 13 points. Marley Wadsworth added 10 points.

ACCS (10-3) will play in the tournament semifinals at 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
