FERRIDAY — Services for Ruth Grant James, 87, of Baton Rouge, formerly of Waterproof, who died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Butterfly Wing of the Hospice of Baton Rouge, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Young’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Kibbie Hatfield officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. James was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Raleigh, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Oscar Grant.

She was a lifelong resident of Waterproof but lived her last years in Baton Rouge to be close to her family. She was employed for a number of years by the sheriff’s department in St. Joseph, La., as chief deputy of tax collections. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waterproof until its closing and was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Serving her community and her church were priorities to her.

To all who loved her, granny was the best mother and grandmother a family could ask for. Her greatest joy was to cook for family and friends. She enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her beautiful roses. She also loved playing bridge with her friends and treating them to her wonderful desserts. Granny was always doing for others and will be forever remembered for her kindness and devotion to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy James Sr.; her parents; one brother, Bill Aaron Grant; two sisters, Alma Stringer and Eleanor Ross; one aunt, Olivia “Malib” James; and one daughter-in-law, Betsy James.

Survivors include two sons, Danny James of Baton Rouge and Roy James Jr. of Waterproof; one niece, Sara Reed of Maryland; one nephew, Joe James of Waterproof; eight grandchildren, Amanda James, Mitsy James Murphy, Dan James, Ashton James, Kelly James, Mary Elizabeth James, Connor James and Caroline James; and four great-grandchildren, Patrick, Little Danny, Betsy and Grant.

Pallbearers will be John Crigler, Joe James, Ashton James, Connor James, Reily Murphy and Jim Reed.

The family extends thanks to the staff of Landmark of Baton Rouge for taking care of “Granny” these last two years, and to the Butterfly Wing of the Hospice of Baton Rouge, especially Trevor, truly angels on earth.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice of Baton Rouge.
