At Mr. Green’s request, his body was cremated.

Mr. Green was born March 30, 1931, in Natchez, the oldest child of Walter Galloway Green Sr. and Ruth Banks Green. He was a 1950 graduate of Natchez High School where he played tackle for the Rebels football team. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at the University of Mississippi where he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He was a lifelong Ole Miss Rebel fan who gently persuaded six of his children and four of his grandchildren (to date) to attend his beloved Ole Miss.

After graduating from Ole Miss in 1955, Mr. Green returned to Natchez to work with his father at H.B. Blanks Construction Company, the family levee business established by his grandfather. In 1956, he entered the insurance industry and spent most of his career with Alexander & Alexander in Atlanta. After retiring, he enjoyed serving on the Atlanta Board of Equalization.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Wes Green and Tom Green; and one brother, William R. Green.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Stone Green; four sons, Walter Green III and wife, Lynne, of Madison, Benton Green and wife, Debbie, of Marietta, Ga., Hance Green and wife, Betsy, of Ridgeland and Stoney Green and wife, Anne, of Atlanta; one daughter, Britton Green Weber and husband, Skip, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Green of Germantown, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, Josh, Aubrey and Susannah Green, all of Madison, Paige and Trey Weber, both of Rancho Palos Verdes, Benton and Alyssa Green, both of Marietta, Dori and Callon Green, both of Germantown, Maggie, Mary Britton and Eliza Green, all of Atlanta, and was looking forward to the arrival of another grandchild this spring; two sisters, Ethel Green Banta and Ruth Ellen Green Calhoun, both of Natchez; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Green was the ultimate grandfather and was confident that all of his grandchildren resembled him. He was known to travel hundreds of miles to attend his grandchildren’s birthday parties, sporting events, grandparents’ day at school, graduations, dance recitals and was always an eager babysitter. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. He was a devoted husband and involved father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., the American Heart Association or a charity of choice.
