NATCHEZ — Maddie Kirkwood’s goal in sudden death proved to be the game-winning goal as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the North Pike Lady Jaguars 4-3 Tuesday night at D’Evereaux Stadium.

“It was a particularly satisfying win for us,” Lady Green Wave coach David Gaudé said. “It was a physical game. Our girls kept going the whole time and we came out ahead.

Marty Ellard scored Cathedral’s lone goal in regulation while Dakota Parks scored for North Pike. With this being a non-division game, the two teams went to penalty kicks to try to determine the outcome.

That didn’t happen, either. The penalty kicks ended up tied 2-2, so the game went to sudden death. After Kirkwood’s goal made it 4-3, North Pike was unable to make its next kick to keep the game going.

“Excellent defense from Taylor White, who was our sweeper. She made some outstanding movement to the side against several other players. She would keep the ball and keep it to the side. She denied them several scoring opportunities,” Gaudé said. “Tess Fairbanks was our offensive midfielder. She and Taylor kept us in the game.”

The Lady Green Wave improved to 8-3 overall.
