FERRIDAY — Two new evening classes are beginning this week at Louisiana Technical College-Shelby M. Jackson Campus for those wishing to further their computer knowledge.
One of the classes, introduction to spreadsheets, has actually been offered every semester for a while, but the college decided to offer it in the evenings to reach a new demographic, instructor Robin Charpentier said.
“This is the first time we have offered it in the evening,” Charpentier said. “We were really going to target those people who were working who can’t make an afternoon or morning class but would have an evening free.”
During the class, students will learn the basics of spreadsheets, especially Microsoft Excel.
“I am really looking for anyone who has a home office of a business, because you can use spreadsheets in budgeting and charting graphics, and other things of that nature,” Charpentier said.
The spreadsheet class will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and starts Thursday. In-state tuition for the class is $188, and out-of-state tuition is $199.50, and includes the course book.
The second class will be an introduction to the Windows 7 operating system.
“What we will be going over and doing hands-on will be introducing Windows 7, and teaching upgrading, setting it up, installing it and working with networks with it,” instructor Kimberlea McKinney said.
Windows 7 comes pre-loaded on all new personal computers, and McKinney said the class would be good for anybody who is considering buying a new computer or who has a new computer.
As the course progresses, it will also address tech issues concerning networking with the new operating system, and McKinney said IT processionals could consider taking the class as well.
“It is for anybody that really has no knowledge to an advanced user,” she said.
The classes started Tuesday, but McKinney said that anyone who joins soon will not have missed much.
The Windows 7 class will also be every Tuesday and Thursday night.
Enrollment for both classes, which will run through April 29, is still open.
