VICKSBURG — For the most part, Cathedral did a good job of controlling Bogue Chitto’s up-tempo style of offense. But in one quarter, they could not stop the Bobcats on the boards and that proved to be costly.

Bogue Chitto scored 19 points and used their size to get some timely offensive rebounds in the second quarter on its way to a 60-55 win over Cathedral Monday night in the boys’ consolation game of the Region 7-1A Tournament at St. Aloysius High School.

“The key was in the second quarter they got way too many offensive rebounds. We did not get anybody on them and box them out. That led to easy shots for them,” Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said.

The first quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams and ended with Cathedral leading 8-6. But the second quarter was when the momentum swung in favor of Bogue Chitto as it outscored Cathedral 19-14 to take a 25-22 halftime lead.

The Bobcats continued to stretch their lead during the third quarter and they even did something as the quarter wound down that caught the Green Wave off guard.

“Strangely, late in the third quarter they started to stall. They were up about six points at the time,” Arnold said. “We picked them up man to man. We got a couple of steals, but we didn’t get enough.”

Bogue Chitto took a 38-30 lead into the fourth quarter, then had to hold off a couple of late surges by Cathedral to hold on for the win. In both instances, the Green Wave cut the lead down to three points. But each time they would the Bobcats, they would make their free throws.

“It was a very close, competitive game,” Arnold said.

Cathedral’s Carl Hammitte led all scorers with 20 points and Daniel Huffines had 10 points. Bogue Chitto was led by Justin London with 17 points, Colby Johnson with 15 points and Byron Kersee with 12 points.

Unfortunately for both Bogue Chitto and Cathedral, they won’t be able to get in any practice before their Class 1A South State play-in games.

Cathedral (10-14) will play at District 6-1A champion Durant while Bogue Chitto hits the road to play at District 6-1A No. 2 seed South Leake. Both games will take place today at 7 p.m.

“We don’t have any chance to practice. I’m trying to get something on Durant. Most people say they’re either the best or one of the two best (in Class 1A),” Arnold said.

Sebastopol girls 55, Cathedral 42

VICKSBURG — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave were unable to capitalize on early scoring opportunities and that hurt them as the game went on as they ended up falling to the Sebastopol Lady Bobcats Monday afternoon in the girls’ consolation game of the Region 7-1A Tournament.

With the loss, Cathedral ended up as the region’s No. 4 seed and will have the unenviable task of having to defeat Region 6-1A champion McAdams on the road Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a Class 1A South State play-in game.

“We had some calls that didn’t go our way. Missed some free throws early. We just didn’t have the shots falling like they should have,” Lady Green Wave head coach Bernita Dunbar said.

With Sebatopol getting scoring contributions from several players, the Lady Bobcats took a 17-11 lead over Cathedral at the end of the first quarter. A low-scoring, defensive-minded second quarter by both teams didn’t exactly help the Lady Green Wave get back in the game as they were outscored by the Lady Bobcats 9-5 to trail 26-16 at halftime.

Even though the Lady Green Wave did better offensively in the second half with 14 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bobcats scored a few more points than they did in each quarter – 16 in the third and 15 in the fourth.

“We didn’t necessarily have a hard time holding the. We just didn’t capitalize on the shooting on our end,” Dunbar said.

Cathedral (12-14) was led by Ana Perrry with 12 points, Epiphany Jackson with nine points and Ginny Daggett with eight points.

Lexus Kennedy finished with a game-high 18 points while Cyndel Webb added 10 points and Ashley McLemore chipped in with nine points for Sebastopol, which will be the region’s No. 3 seed and will play at Region 6-1A No. 2 seed Ethel Wednesday at 7 p.m.
