VIDALIA — A late night stroll ended badly for a Vidalia man after he allegedly fled a questioning police officer.
A Vidalia patrol officer was conducting routine patrols on Alabama Street late Tuesday night when he noticed a subject walking the street, Vidalia Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said.
The subject, Duntrell Rio La Marc Washington, 26, of 9 Alabama St., reportedly began to act agitated when the officer stopped and asked him what he was doing walking the streets late at night, Hendricks said.
“He became belligerent and started getting really nervous, asking questions like, ‘Why are you messing with me?’” Hendricks said.
After the officer asked for Washington’s ID and ran a check on it, the police dispatcher radioed back that the suspect had warrants from the Ferriday Police Department.
When he heard the radio transmission, Washington allegedly started running away from the officer, tossing aside a Smith and Wesson 9 mm handgun, Hendricks said.
As officers pursued him, Washington reportedly tripped and fell.
When they searched him, officers found three large sandwich bags with 20 smaller bags of suspected marijuana in them, Hendricks said.
They also reportedly discovered a small bag of suspected powder cocaine, razor blades, a rectangular white substance that was suspected to be crack cocaine and a lighter, Hendricks said.
The whole of the suspected marijuana weighed 33.8 grams and the suspected crack cocaine weighted 4.6 grams.
The suspect was charged with possession of marijuana with intent, possession of schedule II drugs (powder and crack cocaine), carrying of weapons while in possession of controlled dangerous substance, two counts resisting an officer and bench warrant for contempt of court.
Washington was detained on a $84,000 bond Wednesday.
