BUDE — The Cathedral Lady Wave softball team got off to a very bad start Saturday in the Franklin County Tournament, but they more than made up for it with a fantastic finish.

The Lady Wave found themselves down 11-3 to Lawrence County going into the bottom of the last inning of their first game of the day, but scored nine runs to pull out a thrilling 12-11 win.

“In that last inning, we wound up scoring nine runs without even getting an out,” Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell said. “You talk about an exciting game, that was real exciting.”

Cathedral parlayed that fantastic finish into its next two games, as the Lady Wave routed Natchez High 14-2 and Brookhaven 12-2 to finish the tournament with a 3-0 record.

“We had a lot of errors in the first game and struggled starting off,” Blackwell said. “But the girls kept their composure. They never gave up, came back and played some good ball.

Four Cathedral players had multiple hits in the first game, with Ginny Daggett leading the way with three hits, including a home run.

Mollie Devening, who was also the winning pitcher, Melissa Cavin and Shannon Mire also had multiple hits for Cathedral.

Devening and Betsy Daggett also had doubles in the game.

After the close call in the first game, the Lady Wave wasted no time jumping on Natchez High in the second game, scoring 13 runs in the first inning.

Cathedral only had four hits in the game, with Devening getting two of them, but the Lady Wave took advantage of several walks and passed balls by the Lady Bulldogs.

Cathedral spaced out its scoring in the third game, scoring four runs in the first inning, six in the second and two in the third to blast Brookhaven by 10 runs.

Devening was the winning pitcher once again.

Cathedral upped its overall record to 4-1 with the tournament sweep, and Blackwell said Saturday’s performance is a big confidence boost for the team as it gets ready to start district play later this month.

“It’s a great confidence builder, especially after winning that first game like we did,” Blackwell said. “It’s definitely going to help us now getting ready for district. It was a big day for us.”
