Co-Lin upset in national tourney

SALINA, Kan. — The Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves suffered from poor shooting as they fell to the Casper College (Wyo.) Lady T-Birds 66-56 in the opening round of the NJAA National Tournament in Salina, Kan.

Co-Lin (28-2) will face Lincoln Trail (Ill.) tomorrow at 2 p.m. The game can be heard live at www.colinathletics.com and WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.

Co-Lin, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, shot 30 percent from the field (20-of-54), 52 percent from the free throw line (13-of-240 and was 1-of-15 from 3-point range.

The Lady T-Birds, seeded No. 12, shot 38 percent from the field and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Co-Lin took a 27-22 lead in the first half on a Nadia Collins basket but The Lady T-Birds went on a 6-0 run to end the half to take a 28-27 lead into the dressing room.

The Lady Wolves took a 38-36 lead on two Rachel Vigers free throws with 14:09 left in the second half but Casper tied the game at 40-all with 12:25 left in the game.

The T-Birds went on a 12-5 run to take a 52-45 lead with 8:52 left to play. Co-Lin pulled to within 54-50 at the 6:15 mark, but the Lady T-Birds went on a 10-2 run to go up 64-52 with 2:29 remaining.

Vigers led the Lady Wolves with 19 points. Brandi Simmons added 13 points and led off the backboards with 10 rebounds. Latoria Holder and Shareka Hunt added nine and eight rebounds apiece.

Casper was led by 6-foot sophomore Juliana Paunovic with 22 points and seven rebounds.

Guards Lindsey Fearing and Shanice Billington scored 16 and 14 points respectively. Sophomore Samira Van Grinsven of Helmond, Netherlands led off the backboards with 16 rebounds.
