NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal first baseman Sky Logan knew what pitch he wanted.

And when he got that pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning, he sent it flying over the left field fence for a grand slam, snapping Trinity out of a 1-1 tie against Tensas Academy.

“I looked for a first-pitch fastball, got it and hit it hard,” Logan said.

“It felt great. I’ve been in a big slump, so it was a big confidence boost. Everyone was congratulating me in the dugout.”

Trinity would go on to win the game 9-1, improving the Saints to 6-5 on the season and 3-0 in district play.

Saints head coach Mitch Ashmore said he was very proud of the job Logan has done, despite being an underclassmen.

“Sky’s a young kid, and he has some ability,” Ashmore said. “He’s been put in a situation where he’s able to grow up out here, and he does a wonderful job. That was a big hit, and I hope it builds up his confidence and keeps him going.”

Givonni Dent got the win for Trinity, going all seven innings and striking out 13 batters. His only hit was on a home run scored by Tensas starter J.T. James, who took the loss.

“Dent was absolutely top-notch,” Ashmore said. “He stayed ahead of hitters, and only had two walks. He did what we needed him to do today, which set the tone for the game.

“He allowed us to get out of here with a good, quick, clean game, and that’s what we’re trying to teach our guys.”

Trinity struck first when Daniel Dunaway doubled in Jordan Dossett in the bottom of the second inning. Tensas tied it up in the top of the fourth off of James’ home run.

Logan’s grand slam in the bottom of the fourth scored Dossett, Jake Winston and Trevor Faust. In the bottom of the fifth, Winston tripled in Dent and Faust, and Dossett followed up with an RBI single to score Winston.

Jeremy Cable scored from third on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Winston and Kent King went 2-for-3 for Trinity.

“I think our guys’ approach (at the plate) has been good all season, but I think they’ve taken an ever better approach since the last game in the Vidalia tournament.

“These guys understand the approach they need to take, which is to be patient, learn the counts and what pitches they can handle and how to use all fields.”

The Saints will play at Tensas Academy Friday at 3 p.m.
