FERRIDAY — Eric Schiele always liked goofing around with picture editing programs.

“I have always had Photoshop on my computer, since I was in ninth grade, and I always worked with cutting images of myself out of a picture and putting it into a random location,” he said. “I have always drawn since as long as I can remember.”

But now, that goofing around has gotten serious and television and movie production companies are using his graphic products.

The 20-year-old Ferriday High School graduate, currently a junior at Southern University, recently had three pieces of graphic art picked up by the HBO show “Treme.”

It started when Schiele got a call from one of his art professors, who told him about a graphic design company that was working with the show.

After networking with the CEO of the company — 11:24 Design Advertising — Schiele got to work with the assignment, using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, piecing together pictures of handwritten music, a microphone, French Quarter buildings and a piano.

“He was looking for an image that showed life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina through the eyes of jazz musicians,” Schiele said. “I worked with him for roughly a month, I sent him maybe 12 images and of those, three came back with the HBO logo on them.”

And that work went on to land Schiele other work.

Now, he is working on designing the DVD cover for Spike Lee’s “When the Levees Broke, part II.”

He realizes that not everyone gets a chance to do work like he is, Schiele said.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime, that a 20-year-old art major at Southern University got a chance to do this,” he said.
