Natchez Regional Medical Center looks healthier than it has in years and the prognosis has nothing to do with financial statements.

No, it’s all about people this time, specifically, two people.

When the hospital board members settled into their chairs Wednesday for a meeting, two visitors joined the group.

County supervisors Mike Lazarus and S.E. “Spanky” Felter dropped by for a check-up of sorts.

And since the hospital is county-owned and the supervisors are elected to represent the county, we couldn’t be happier about the news.

Next time maybe Lazarus and Felter can bring along their three other boardroom buddies.

While the troubled hospital seemed in a downward spiral the last few years, county leaders spent their time putting up imaginary “for sale” signs and pointing fingers at times.

But this year, after a wakeup call from NRMC employees who have faith in their hospital, the supervisors have traded the hospital auction block for the boardroom and the pointed fingers for open ears.

It’s exactly what NRMC and our county needs.

If Lazarus, Felter and others truly get involved, come to the table with an open mind and regularly communicate with the hospital’s board and employees, the taxpayers will truly get the clean bill of health they deserve.
