Alcorn loses in SWAC title game

SHREVEPORT — Alcorn State’s dreams of claiming a first ever SWAC baseball championship came crashing down in a cluster of errors.

The Braves committed six errors in a 15-2 loss to Grambling State in the tournament championship game Sunday afternoon.

Grambling, which won its first SWAC baseball title since 1985, did not commit an error.

The Tigers jumped on the board first with a run in the second inning and then scored four more in the top of the fourth with only one hit, thanks to three Alcorn State errors.

Alcorn finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Cole Vicars single but Grambling countered with a run in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh.

The Tigers then turned the game into a rout with four runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Milton Barney drove in a run with a double and Steve Kletke drove in two more with a single. Mychal Roby then doubled to drive home another run.

Grambling scored three more times in the top of the ninth inning with the big hit in the inning a double by Arthur Mazierski.

Alcorn got its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Brandon Hollins.

With the win, Grambling gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, and will find out which regional it is in today.
