BROOKHAVEN — Services for Vernon Smith, 77, of Brookhaven, who died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at his residence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverwood Family Funeral Service Chapel.

Burial will follow at Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery under the direction of Riverwood Family Funeral Service in Brookhaven.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Lucien, the son of Earn and Mary Watts Smith. He was a 1952 graduate of McCall Creek High School. He retired from International Paper Company in Natchez after 39 years of service.

Mr. Smith was a member of Damascus Baptist Church, but attended Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church where he was active and supportive in its ministry. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 101st Airborne in Germany during the Korean War.

Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved watching everyone’s children play ball, but the highlight of his life was watching and supporting his grandchildren in all their activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Smith; one son, Glyn Smith and wife, Tawanda, of Brookhaven; two daughters, Angela Smith and husband, Jimmy, of Brookhaven and Renee Chevallier and husband, Mark, of Shreveport; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Kyzar of Vidalia; five grandchildren, Carrie Case and husband, Daniel, Cole Smith and wife, Whitney, Lauren Smith, Thor Chevallier and Ty Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Rayne and Riely Case.

Pallbearers will be Bubba Griffith, Eric Smith, Roger Smith, Andy Cupit, Shane Douglas and Sammy Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Reeves, Gene Strait, Jerry Nations, Mike Thompson, Ellis Williams, Jimmy Smith, Buddy Price and Charles Cupit.
